چکیده

BACKGROUND Studies of the normal zone in high-temperature superconducting wires are extremely important for power applications, such as fault current limiters, motors, cables etc. We studied the temperature distribution and normal domain propagation in high-temperature superconducting YBCO tape with highly resistive substrate. FINDINGS For applied voltages exceeding a certain threshold value the normal domain was found to become unstable and started to propagate along the tape. CONCLUSIONS The normal domain in superconducting tape with highly resistive substrate appears when voltage is applied to the sample. At voltages greater than the threshold value, the domain starts to move. This motion enables us to find the domain temperature and potential profile.

Temporal resistance variation of the second generation HTS tape during superconducting-to-normal state transition

BACKGROUND The quench process in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires plays an important role in superconducting power devices, such as fault current limiters, magnets, cables, etc. The superconducting device should survive after the overheating due to quench. METHODS We studied the evolution of the resistance of the YBCO tape wire during the quench process with 1 ms time resolution f...

Evaluation of AC loss and temperature distribution in high temperature superconducting tape using COMSOL Multiphysics

High temperature superconductors (HTS) are promising candidates for electrical power applications. The electrical devices using HTS conductors or tapes with high critical temperature (Tc) and high current carrying capability operate with more efficiency and higher power density compared to the conventional one. But the superconductor exhibits energy loss known as AC loss when exposed to time va...

Behavioural Modelling of High Temperature Superconducting Wires and Coils for Power Engineering Applications

Many aspects of the behaviour of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires are well understood for dc applications. However, models of HTS suitable for use in circuit analysis by power engineers designing HTS applications are not readily available. This paper describes the initial development of suitable models for HTS wire. The V-I characteristics for wires carrying dc transport current can...

Enhanced quench propagation in 2G-HTS coils co-wound with stainless steel or anodised aluminium tapes

Early quench detection and thermal stability of superconducting coils are of great relevance for practical applications. Magnets made with second generation high temperature superconducting (2G-HTS) tapes present low quench propagation velocities and therefore slow voltage development and high local temperature rises, which may cause irreversible damage. Since quench propagation depends on the ...
